Afghanistan’s Historic Win Against New Zealand

T20 WC 2024: Afghanistan beat New Zealand by 84 runs

Afghanistan achieved a historic victory against New Zealand by 84 runs at the Guyana National Stadium during the T20 World Cup. This win marked Afghanistan’s first-ever triumph over New Zealand in T20 International cricket. Batting first, Afghanistan set a target of 160 runs. The Kiwis struggled to chase down the total and were bowled out for just 75 runs in 15.2 overs.

Outstanding Batting by Rahmanullah Gurbaz

Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the star performer with the bat for Afghanistan. He scored 80 runs off 56 balls, including five fours and five sixes. Gurbaz, along with Ibrahim Zadran, who scored 44 runs, put up a solid opening partnership of 103 runs by the 15th over. Their efforts led Afghanistan to a final score of 159 for six wickets after being asked to bat first by New Zealand.

Fazalhaq Farooqi and Rashid Khan Shine with the Ball

Fazalhaq Farooqi played a crucial role in Afghanistan’s bowling attack. Continuing his excellent form from the previous match against Uganda, Farooqi took the first three wickets of New Zealand’s innings. He later returned to claim his fourth wicket, sealing the win for Afghanistan. Rashid Khan, the captain and leg-spinner, also delivered an impressive performance, taking four wickets for 17 runs. His spell included dismissing New Zealand’s captain, Kane Williamson, with the first ball he bowled.

Challenges Ahead for New Zealand

New Zealand’s loss revealed their lack of form and readiness. As the 2021 beaten finalists, this unexpected defeat means they face a difficult path ahead in the tournament. Their next challenge is against co-hosts West Indies in Trinidad next Wednesday, where they will need to bounce back and regain their momentum.

Afghanistan’s victory not only puts them at the top of Group C but also boosts their confidence as they continue their campaign in the T20 World Cup.
