Will CSK Retain MS Dhoni Under New IPL 2025 Rules?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the retention rules for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, which included a significant change for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). According to these new rules, any player who hasn’t played for India in the last five years will be considered ‘uncapped‘. This means the franchise will need to pay much less to keep that player before the auction. This rule affects former Indian captain MS Dhoni, allowing CSK to retain him for just Rs 4 crore. However, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan shared some important thoughts on Dhoni’s future in the IPL.

CSK CEO’s Statement on Dhoni’s Future

“We are not sure yet. We might not even use the uncapped retention for MS Dhoni. It’s too early to say because we haven’t had any discussions with him. Dhoni was in the US, and I haven’t talked to him yet. I’ll be traveling this week, and there might be a chance for discussions next week, which could provide some clarity. We hope he will continue, but Dhoni himself will decide,” Viswanathan said in an interview with the Times of India.

Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020, with his last match for India being the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand, which India lost.

New Retention Rule Explained

As per the IPL statement, a player who has represented India will be treated as uncapped if they haven’t played for the national team in the last five calendar years or don’t have a central contract with the BCCI. This rule is only for Indian players and will impact how franchises plan their retentions for the upcoming season.
