Tim Southee has decided to step down as New Zealand Test captain, tom Latham to take over as New Zealand test Captain, according to New Zealand Cricket’s announcement on Wednesday (October 2). This news comes shortly after New Zealand’s 2-0 defeat in their recent Test series in Sri Lanka. Latham’s first assignment as the full-time captain will be leading the team in the upcoming Test series against India.
Tim Southee’s Journey as Test Captain
Southee, who has played 102 Test matches for New Zealand since his debut in 2008 and has taken 382 wickets, became the Test captain in December 2022 after Kane Williamson. Under his leadership, the team played 14 Test matches, winning six, losing six, and drawing two.
Southee’s Reason for Stepping Down
Southee mentioned that his decision was in the team’s best interest. “Captaining the BLACKCAPS in a format I cherish has been an incredible honor and privilege,” he said. “Throughout my career, I have always tried to prioritize the team, and I believe this is the right decision for us.
“My focus now is on my performances on the field, getting back to my best form, taking wickets, and helping New Zealand win Test matches. I will continue to support my teammates, especially the young bowlers entering the international scene. I wish Tom all the best, and he knows he has my full support, just as he has supported me over the years,” Southee added.
Coach Gary Stead’s Remarks
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead praised Southee, saying, “Tim is a fantastic player and an excellent leader, highly respected by the players and staff. He has been a tremendous asset to New Zealand Cricket for nearly 17 years on the international stage, and I appreciate his humility in stepping down from the Test captaincy.
“It’s never easy to give up something you love, but Tim is a true team player and made this decision with the team’s best interests in mind. He is one of our greatest players, and we still see him playing an important role in our Test side moving forward,” Stead said.
Upcoming Test Series Against India
New Zealand, who won the first World Test Championship, are currently sixth in the WTC standings. They will face India, the current leaders, in a three-match Test series, with games to be held in Bengaluru (October 16-20), Pune (October 24-28), and Mumbai (November 1-5).
