After Rahul Dravid Another Indian Cricket Star Turns Down Head Coach Role

The search for India’s next cricket coach heats up as Rahul Dravid tenure ends after the 2024 T20 World Cup in June. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) aims to appoint a new coach by July 1, responsible until the end of 2027, overseeing events like the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2027 ODI World Cup. Rumors hint that India might opt for an overseas coach, a rare choice.

Rahul Dravid, who extended his term post the 2023 ODI World Cup, has informed the Board of his decision not to seek further extension due to personal reasons. Despite requests from some senior players to continue with the Test team, Dravid declined.

Speculation pointed towards VVS Laxman, head of the National Cricket Academy, as a top contender. However, reports suggest he’s unlikely to pursue the position.

Stephen Fleming, former New Zealand captain and current Chennai Super Kings head coach, emerged as a potential candidate. With five IPL titles under his belt with CSK, BCCI views Fleming favorably for his leadership and management skills. Yet, CSK denies any communication between Fleming and the franchise.

“I have not heard anything like this. There has been no communication from Stephen Fleming to CSK either,” stated CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan.

Reports also suggest Ricky Ponting’s candidacy for the role.
