Chennai Super Kings played their fifth match in the IPL 2024. They lost to Punjab Kings at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday, May 1st. Chennai batted first and scored 162 runs but couldn’t stop Punjab from winning by seven wickets. After the match, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad talked about why they lost.
Gaikwad, who is 27 years old, blamed the wetness on the field for their loss. He thought they needed 50 to 60 more runs to win. He said the pitch wasn’t good when they started batting. But as the game went on, it got better. The wetness from dew also made it hard for them. Gaikwad also mentioned the “Impact Player” rule didn’t help them much.
He said they were surprised by their last win against Sunrisers Hyderabad. They won by 78 runs, which was more than they expected. Gaikwad explained they didn’t think they would win by that much considering the conditions.
So, Gaikwad thinks they lost because they couldn’t score enough runs at the start. The wet field and the new rule also made it harder for them to defend their score. He also mentioned their previous win, where they did much better than they thought they would.
It’s a real problem: Gaikwad
It was a very unlucky day for the Chennai Super Kings. Even before the match started, two of their players, Tushar Deshpande and Matheesha Pathirana, couldn’t play because one was sick and the other had a small injury. Then, during the game, Deepak Chahar hurt himself in the first over.
Chennai had to use Sameer Rizvi as an important player because of the injuries. This meant Ruturaj Gaikwad, their captain, didn’t have many good bowlers to rely on. This gave the Punjab team’s batters a chance to score more easily.
“It’s a real problem,” Gaikwad said. “There were times when we really needed to get a wicket, but we only had two bowlers who could do it. Also, because of the dew, our spinners couldn’t play well. It was a tough day, but these things happen sometimes. We still have four more games to play. I hope we can do better in those games.”
So, Chennai Super Kings had a tough time in the match because of injuries to their players. They hope to do better in the upcoming games.
