Teams in T20I cricket have had highs and lows with their batting. They’ve scored big against strong opponents and struggled badly against others.

This article explores the lowest scores of the top 10 teams in T20I cricket.

10. Afghanistan

The Afghan team scored their lowest ever against Bangladesh, making only 72 runs during the 2014 World T20. Shakib al Hasan took 3 wickets for 8 runs, stopping Afghan batsmen from reaching even 25 runs each.

9. Bangladesh

The lowest score of 70 runs was recorded by Bangladesh during the 2016 T20 World Cup match against New Zealand. New Zealand batted first and scored 145 runs. Kane Williamson, their dependable batsman, scored 42 runs off 32 balls.

Bangladesh struggled in their reply. Grant Elliott and Ish Sodhi took three wickets each, bowling out Bangladesh for only 70 runs.

8. West Indies

In March 2019, West Indies had their worst batting performance against England, scoring only 45 runs before getting all out. England’s batsmen then scored a high total of 182 runs. In their innings, Chris Jordan from England took 4 wickets for just 6 runs, leading to a massive defeat for West Indies by 137 runs.

7. Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan cricket team recorded their lowest score of 82 against India, a cricket powerhouse in Asia. This happened in February 2016 during a match in Vishakapatnam. In that game, only two Sri Lankan batsmen scored more than ten runs, reflecting a disappointing performance.

India easily chased down the target of 83 runs and won the match with 9 wickets remaining. Currently, Sri Lanka is ranked 7th in T20 International cricket. They achieved their greatest success in this format by winning the World Cup in 2014.

6. South Africa

In February 2020, South Africa played their worst T20I match ever against Australia. Australia batted first and scored a huge 196 runs for 6 wickets. Ashton Agar, an Australian player, bowled exceptionally well, taking 5 wickets for only 24 runs. South Africa struggled in their reply and only managed to score 89 runs before all their batsmen were out.

5. Pakistan

In 2012, Pakistan faced a major setback when Australia defeated them in Dubai. Australia batted first on September 10th, scoring 168/7. David Warner and Shane Watson started strong with 111 runs. Despite Saeed Ajmal taking 2 wickets for 19 runs in 4 overs, Pakistan struggled.

Pakistan’s batting collapsed against Mitchell Starc, who took 3 wickets for 11 runs. They were all out for 74, giving Australia a big 94-run win.

4. England

In the 2012 ICC T20 World Cup, England faced their worst-ever performance in T20I cricket when they scored only 80 runs against India. This low score led to a crushing defeat by 90 runs. India batted first, with Rohit Sharma playing a key role, scoring 55 runs off 33 balls. India ended their innings with a strong total of 170/4.

Craig Kieswetter was the only England batsman to make an impact, scoring 35 runs opening the innings. The next highest score was just 12 runs by Jade Dernbach, who came in at No. 11, highlighting England’s struggle throughout the match.

3. New Zealand

In 2014, New Zealand faced a tough match against Sri Lanka in the T20 World Cup, where they scored their lowest ever total of just 60 runs. Despite their bowlers limiting Sri Lanka to 119 runs, New Zealand’s batsmen struggled throughout. Kane Williamson was the main contributor with 42 runs, highlighting their dependence on him. Sri Lankan bowler Rangana Herath was exceptional, taking five wickets while conceding only 3 runs in 3.3 overs, making it extremely difficult for New Zealand to mount a successful innings.

2. Australia

In 2005, Australia faced England in only their second T20I match at Southampton. England scored 179 runs in their innings. Australia, known for strong batsmen like Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden, and Ricky Ponting, batted first but collapsed, scoring only 79 runs. This led to England winning by a massive 100 runs.

1. India

India’s lowest score in T20 International cricket is 74 runs.

This happened against Australia on 1st February 2008, at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground. India batted first and could only manage 74 runs before being all out. Irfan Pathan was the highest scorer for India with 26 runs. Nathan Bracken of Australia bowled exceptionally well, taking 3 wickets for just 11 runs in 2.3 overs.

Australia easily chased down the target and won the match with 9 wickets remaining.

Looking ahead, with the T20 World Cup set to take place in India next year, there is a lot of hope and high expectations for the Indian team to win the trophy.
