Indian Fans React to Michael Vaughan's Virat Kohli vs Joe Root Debate

Michael Vaughan, the former England cricket captain known for his bold opinions and active social media presence, recently stirred up a debate. He tweeted a comparison of Test cricket statistics for Virat Kohli vs Joe Root, which upset Kohli’s fans.

The Comparison

Vaughan shared a handwritten note Virat Kohli vs Joe Root:

  • Virat Kohli: 191 innings, 8,848 runs, average of 49.15, strike rate of 55.56, 29 centuries, 30 half-centuries.
  • Joe Root: 263 innings, 12,131 runs, average of 50.33, strike rate of 56.70, 32 centuries, 64 half-centuries.

Fans’ Response

On paper, Root’s numbers look better due to his higher average, more runs, and centuries. However, Vaughan’s comparison was seen as misleading. Fans quickly noted that Kohli had played 72 fewer innings than Root. Many defended Kohli, pointing out his strong performances in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia). They highlighted that Kohli has scored six Test centuries in Australia, while Root hasn’t scored any there.

The Backlash

Vaughan’s attempt to spark a debate backfired as fans showed their deep knowledge and passion for cricket. His comparison was criticized for not taking the number of innings into account, and his effort to create controversy didn’t go as planned.
