Luis Suarez Announces Retirement

Uruguayan football star Luis Suarez announces retirement from international football at the age of 37. Known as Uruguay’s top goal scorer, Suarez ends his international career with 69 goals in 142 matches. His 17-year journey with the national team includes leading Uruguay to the 2010 World Cup semifinals and winning the Copa America in 2011.

Final Match Against Paraguay

Suarez announced that his last game for Uruguay will be on Friday against Paraguay in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. He expressed relief that his retirement is his own decision, not due to injury or being sidelined. He said, “It’s hard, but it gives me peace knowing that I gave everything until the last game and that my passion never faded.”

A Memorable Last Goal

In July, Suarez scored a vital goal in stoppage time against Canada, helping Uruguay secure third place in the Copa America. He mentioned that his dream was for his children to see him win something significant with the national team, and although it wasn’t a trophy, that last goal was special for them.

A Thoughtful Farewell

Suarez explained that he wanted to retire in his own stadium, surrounded by his people, and give his children the experience of seeing him say goodbye on his own terms. His retirement will also mark the end of his career with Major League Soccer club Inter Miami.
