The coach of the Australian cricket team, Andrew McDonald, announced that two young players, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matthew Short, are joining the squad as backup players for the T20 World Cup. Fraser-McGurk, aged 22, had an impressive debut season in the Indian Premier League (IPL), scoring a lot of runs quickly for the Delhi Capitals team. This caught the attention of many cricket experts who suggested he should be in the main squad. However, he was initially left out but is now included as a backup.
McDonald explained that Fraser-McGurk is an excellent opener, while Short is more versatile, known for his batting in the middle order and his spin bowling. Short could fill in if another player like Glenn Maxwell gets injured.
These two backup players won’t play unless there’s an injury to someone in the main squad. The Australian team is flying out soon for the World Cup.
McDonald mentioned other backup options too, like Spencer Johnson and Xavier Bartlett, who are playing cricket in the UK. If needed, they can quickly join the team from England.
Regarding David Warner’s fitness, McDonald said he’s doing well and should be fully fit for the tournament. Australia’s first match is against Oman on June 6 in Barbados.
