BCCI Might Delay IPL Retention Rule Decision

BCCI Might Delay IPL Retention Rule Decision

There could be a delay in announcing the IPL retention rules. Reports suggest that the BCCI might postpone the announcement until the end of September. It’s possible that the policy will be revealed around the time of the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 29 in Bengaluru.

Potential Timing and Franchises’ Deadline

Even though there’s no official link between the AGM and the IPL policies, it’s expected that the announcement could be delayed by 10 days to two weeks. Franchises have not received formal communication but have been informally told by BCCI officials about the delay. Initially, the BCCI planned to announce the policy by the end of August, but franchise officials were informed of the new September deadline.

Retention Deadline and Auction Details

Regardless of when the BCCI announces the retention policy, franchises might have until November 15 to make their final retention decisions. The auction, expected in December, will include the Right to Match (RTM) options.

Impact of Potential Policy Changes

The BCCI is considering a change that would classify retired international players as uncapped, but it is uncertain if this will significantly affect the auction purse. This policy change is not necessarily aimed at benefiting MS Dhoni or Chennai Super Kings (CSK), but rather to benefit the league if Dhoni continues to play.

If Dhoni decides to play next season, CSK plans to retain him, even if the BCCI limits the number of retentions. This potential change could also impact other players like Sunil Narine, who retired from international cricket in 2019.

Overall, the uncapping of retired players may not greatly impact the auction purse, as the BCCI will adjust the purse based on the number of retentions. This will allow franchises to set player prices without heavily influencing the value of retained players.
