Dipendra Singh Airee, a 24-year-old policeman from Nepal, has earned the nickname “The Tiger” for his remarkable batting skills. He gained international fame last September when Nepal achieved a record-breaking victory against Mongolia by 273 runs. Airee’s contribution to this win was particularly astonishing as he set a new record for the fastest T20 fifty, achieving it in just nine balls. He hit sixes from the first six balls he faced and completed his half-century in no time, breaking the previous record of 12 balls. In April, Airee showcased his talent again by hitting six sixes in a single over against Qatar. Known not only for his batting prowess but also for his exceptional fielding, Airee aims to make his country proud in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Airee’s Motivation and Goals

Airee draws inspiration from the support he receives from fans and the nickname “The Tiger” that motivates him to give his best. In an interview with Kantipur Television, he expressed his commitment to contributing to the team’s success at the T20 World Cup. Nepal’s chief selector, Dipendra Chaudhary, praises Airee for his off-spin bowling, fitness, work ethic, and team spirit. Chaudhary believes Airee has the potential to be remembered as one of Nepal’s finest players in history. Initially starting as a medium-paced bowler, Airee transitioned into a batsman and now excels as an all-rounder, demonstrating his versatility and dedication.

From Humble Beginnings to World Cup Dreams

Airee’s journey to the World Cup is a significant milestone for him. Reflecting on his career, he recalled watching the last tournament from Nepal and feeling deeply moved when his team qualified. Known for his humble and shy demeanor, Airee first gained attention in the 2016 Under-19 World Cup. Despite his quiet nature, his remarkable talent was quickly recognized. Chaudhary highlights Airee’s dedication to his craft, noting that he spends most of his time on the ground, honing his skills and maintaining a strong work ethic.

Nepal’s T20 World Cup Prospects

The T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States and West Indies, begins on Saturday, with Nepal playing their first game on June 4 in Dallas. Nepal, ranked 17th in the ICC rankings, faces tough competition, but the team is hopeful for good performances. Their preparations were somewhat overshadowed by the controversy surrounding Sandeep Lamichhane, a former star player who was excluded from the squad due to legal issues. Despite these challenges, Chaudhary emphasizes that the team’s focus is on playing good cricket and improving their performance. The ultimate goal is to attract big cricketing nations to play in Nepal, which would be a significant achievement for the country’s cricketing future.
