Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman, known for his prowess with the bat, is hesitant to take up the role of head coach for the Indian cricket team. Despite his extensive experience and interim coaching stint, Laxman has not applied for the position, which is expected to be physically and mentally demanding for the next few years.

Board’s Preference for an Indian Coach

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) seems inclined towards appointing an Indian coach who understands the nuances of the cricketing ecosystem. Secretary Jay Shah has hinted at this preference, indicating a desire for a coach who has risen through the ranks and is well-versed with Indian cricket.

Challenges Faced by Laxman

Laxman’s reluctance may stem from the taxing nature of the job and his current commitments. Despite his significant contributions to Indian cricket, including his role as the head of the country’s pathways cricket system, Laxman has not yet shown interest in applying for the coaching position.

Potential Successors and Future Plans

With Laxman’s tenure at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) coming to an end, the BCCI is considering various options for the head of cricket role. Current national team batting coach Vikram Rathour emerges as a potential candidate, given his technical expertise and experience within the cricketing fraternity.
