Michael Clarke, former captain of Australia, believes that India has taken a significant risk with their T20 World Cup squad. He points out that the team is heavily reliant on spinners, a strategy that could be risky. India has included four spinners: Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, who are all-rounders, and wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal. Clarke feels this heavy emphasis on spin might backfire, especially given the different conditions they will face in the Caribbean.

Clarke expressed his concerns in an interview with ESPN, highlighting that India’s approach is very different from Australia’s. “In the Caribbean, the ability to play spin well will be crucial,” he said. Clarke acknowledges that India poses a significant threat to Australia’s chances in the World Cup but suggests that the gamble on spinners could be their downfall. He believes mastering spin will be key to success in the tournament.
India’s Favourable Preparation
Despite his concerns, Clarke admits that India remains a strong contender for the World Cup title. He credits the extensive cricket played by Indian players, particularly in the IPL, for their strong preparation. “If you look at the favourites for the World Cup, it’s got to be India due to the amount of cricket they have played,” Clarke stated. He noted that while conditions in the Caribbean are different from India, there are enough similarities for the players to adapt well.
Kohli’s Absence and Upcoming Matches
The Indian cricket team began their World Cup preparations with a morning training session, adjusting to the 10.30 am starts for their preliminary games. Notably, Virat Kohli was absent due to personal reasons following RCB’s exit from the IPL. He is expected to join the squad by Friday, but his participation in the only warm-up game against Bangladesh on June 1 remains uncertain. India’s T20 World Cup campaign will kick off against Ireland on June 5.
