Jasprit Bumrah’s New Role: Why He’s No Longer Test Vice-Captain

Jasprit Bumrah's New Role

Jasprit Bumrah, who was previously the vice-captain during the Test series against England, will now play as a regular team member in the upcoming first Test against Bangladesh. The team has not named a vice-captain for this series. The first match will start on September 19 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, followed by the second match on September 27 at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.

Bumrah’s Position in the Team

India’s fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, played the role of vice-captain earlier this year against England. However, for the first Test against Bangladesh, he will not continue in this role. Bumrah remains an important player in the squad, but he will no longer serve as Rohit Sharma’s deputy.

Along with Bumrah, other leaders in the team include KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Virat Kohli. Though Kohli has chosen not to hold any leadership positions, Rahul and Pant are seen as possible future captains for the Test team.

No Vice-Captain for Bangladesh Series

For this series against Bangladesh, no vice-captain has been appointed. This decision might indicate that the BCCI and team management do not see Bumrah as a potential captain. His frequent injuries may have contributed to this decision, as managing his workload is crucial for his long-term availability.

Bumrah’s Previous Captaincy Experience

Bumrah has led India before, including in the rescheduled 2022 Test against England and in the 2023 match against Ireland, where he received praise for his captaincy. However, being consistently available is key for a captain, and Bumrah’s injury concerns could limit his chances of holding a permanent leadership role.

Changes in Leadership Under Gautam Gambhir

Since Gautam Gambhir became the head coach, India’s leadership approach has changed. In T20Is, Hardik Pandya was replaced by Suryakumar Yadav as vice-captain. In both ODIs and T20Is, Shubman Gill has taken over the vice-captaincy, sparking discussions about his possible role in Test cricket as well.
