Jay Shah's Unopposed Election as ICC Chairman

Jay Shah, the current BCCI Secretary, will become the ICC Chairman in December 2024. At 35, he will be the youngest person ever to hold this position.

Cricket West Indies CEO’s Perspective

Johnny Grave, CEO of Cricket West Indies, explained why Shah was elected unopposed. Grave highlighted Shah’s achievements at BCCI since he joined in 2019, noting his successful initiatives such as:

  • Launching the Women’s Premier League in India
  • Securing a major media rights deal for the IPL
  • Overseeing the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in India

Avoiding Internal Politics

According to Grave, ICC members preferred not to engage in “internal politics” during Shah’s election. His leadership at BCCI, marked by effective management and successful deals, was a significant factor in his unopposed selection.

Expectations for the Future

Grave believes Shah will bring the same success to the ICC, particularly in securing valuable media rights deals. Shah’s track record with the IPL and other cricket ventures makes him a strong candidate for enhancing ICC’s revenue from the Indian sub-continent, a major source of income.
