Mingueza’s Impressive Form Raises Questions About Barcelona’s Buyback Option

Mingueza's Impressive Form Raises Questions

Oscar Mingueza has been one of the standout players in La Liga this season. The former Barcelona defender, now playing for Celta Vigo, has been impressive, contributing to five goals in five matches.

Mingueza’s Impact at Right-Back

Playing as a right-back, Mingueza has been excellent, adding width and creativity to his team’s attacks. His strong performances have sparked rumors about a possible return to Barcelona, with reports suggesting the club has the option to buy him back.

Celta Vigo’s Director Gives a Surprising Update

However, Marco Garces, Celta Vigo’s sporting director, made surprising comments about Mingueza’s contract. He contradicted the official statement from Barcelona regarding the terms of Mingueza’s transfer to Celta Vigo in August 2022.

Conflicting Statements on Mingueza’s Contract

When Barcelona sold Mingueza, they claimed they kept a “buy-back option and 50% of any future sale.” But Garces offered a different view.
Speaking to the press (via Mundo Deportivo), Garces said Barcelona only has a “right of first refusal and a share of any future sale, but no actual buy-back clause.”

This directly challenges Barcelona’s earlier statement, making Mingueza’s future even more uncertain, especially with his current form.

Mingueza’s Current Form and Future

Mingueza has been in top form this season, earning him a call-up to the Spanish national team, though he didn’t play in the recent matches against Serbia and Switzerland. Mingueza, whose contract with Celta lasts until 2026, made his name at Barcelona’s La Masia academy before moving to Vigo. He also played for Spain in 2021 when the U-21 squad was called up due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the senior team.
