Mitchell Starc Hints at Retirement After IPL 2024 Triumph

Mitchell Starc was the Player of the Match in the IPL 2024 final

Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc, named Player of the Match in the IPL 2024 final, has hinted at possibly retiring from one format of cricket to accommodate more franchise cricket. At 34 years old, Starc has primarily focused on his national duties, often foregoing lucrative private leagues. Although he didn’t specify which format he might give up, it’s speculated to be One Day Internationals (ODIs), given the next 50-over World Cup is three years away. Starc played a pivotal role for Kolkata Knight Riders, claiming 17 wickets in the tournament, including five crucial ones in the knockout stages, leading his team to victory.

Prioritizing T20s in the Future

Responding to questions from PTI, Starc suggested that T20s might become more prominent in his career moving forward. He reflected on his commitment to Australian cricket over the past nine years, often taking breaks to rest and spend time with his wife. “I’m closer to the end of my career than the start,” Starc said. He implied that dropping one format could allow him to participate more in franchise cricket, emphasizing the benefit of preparing for the T20 World Cup in the West Indies, starting June 1. Starc expressed his enjoyment of the IPL and his hope to return next year, donning the purple and gold of KKR again.

Impact of IPL on World Cup Preparation

Starc highlighted the advantages of playing in the IPL for preparing for the T20 World Cup. He noted that the high scores in the IPL, driven by the Impact Player rule, are unlikely to be replicated in the World Cup due to different pitch conditions. Starc expects the worn-out pitches in the West Indies to favor spinners more and predicts lower scores. He mentioned the physical demands of T20 cricket are less than Test cricket, and the cooler conditions in the West Indies would be easier to handle after the hot and humid IPL season.

Handling Criticism and Price Tags

Despite facing criticism and discussions about his hefty price tag, Starc remains unfazed. He emphasized that extra motivation isn’t necessary for him as an international player. “I’m glad to contribute,” he said, downplaying the pressure of high expectations. Starc acknowledged the friendly banter about his price but stated that he’s used to critics throughout his career. Reflecting on the IPL final, he summed up his feelings succinctly: “Tonight was a perfect night.
