Jay Shah, the newly elected Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), sent out his best wishes to everyone on National Sports Day, which honors the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand. Major Dhyan Chand, known as ‘The Wizard’ of hockey, played for India’s national team from 1925 to 1949. He scored more than 1500 goals in 185 matches and won three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956, and his birthday, August 29, is celebrated as National Sports Day in India.

On this occasion, Shah praised athletes, coaches, and everyone dedicated to sports. He emphasized the importance of making India a global leader in sports. Shah, who will officially start his role as ICC Chairman on December 1, 2024, expressed his commitment to helping India and other nations excel in sports on the world stage.
Jay Shah’s Election as ICC Chairman
Earlier in the week, Jay Shah was chosen as the new ICC Chairman without any opposition. Shah has been the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) since October 2019 and has also served as the Chairman of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021. He was the only candidate for the ICC chairmanship after the current Chair, Greg Barclay, decided not to run for a third term.

Shah’s Goals as ICC Chairman
After his election, Shah shared his plans to expand cricket’s global reach. He sees the inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as a crucial opportunity for the sport’s growth. At just 35 years old, Jay Shah becomes the youngest person to ever lead the ICC.
