The IPL 2024 final between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad was notable for not featuring any Indian cricket team players selected for the T20 World Cup 2024. The only exception was Rinku Singh, who was included as a reserve for the tournament. This absence led to comments from legendary Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram, who jokingly suggested that the Indian players might have been “thinking ahead” and resting for the World Cup.
Wasim Akram’s Humorous Take
Wasim Akram humorously remarked that Indian players might have deliberately avoided playing in the IPL final to avoid fatigue before the World Cup. He said, “At least now none of them will have to say they are tired. They were thinking ahead, prioritizing India over the IPL final.” Akram also mentioned that this could be a “blessing in disguise” for the Indian team as they prepare for the World Cup without the burden of exhaustion from the IPL.
Concerns About Player Fatigue
Akram expressed his concerns about player fatigue during a previous discussion, noting the rigorous travel schedules and matches. He highlighted that players from both India and Pakistan would face challenges, including travel to places like Dallas for matches. However, he remained optimistic, stating that the high fitness levels of modern players should help them recover quickly for the T20 World Cup.
Indian Team’s Travel Plans
The first batch of Indian players, including prominent names like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah, left for New York on Monday. They were joined by other key players and reserves. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, and Rinku Singh from Rajasthan Royals will join the squad soon. Notably, Hardik Pandya and Virat Kohli are set to join the team later. India is set to start its T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 5, followed by a crucial match against Pakistan on June 9.
