Shai Hope’s 82* Leads West Indies to 9-Wicket Win Over USA

T20 WC 2024: West Indies beat USA by 9 wickets

Shai Hope Shines as West Indies Dominate USA

In a stunning performance at the T20 World Cup, Shai Hope led the West Indies to a crushing nine-wicket victory over the United States. Hope’s unbeaten 82 runs from just 39 balls were the highlight of the match, as he smashed eight sixes and four fours. The West Indies chased down the target of 129 set by the USA in just 10.5 overs, finishing at 130/1. This impressive win has significantly boosted the West Indies’ standing in Group 2 of the Super Eight stage.

West Indies Bowlers Set Up the Victory

The foundation of the West Indies’ victory was laid by their bowlers, who restricted the USA to a modest total of 128 runs in 19.5 overs. Andre Russell and Roston Chase were the standout performers, each taking three wickets. Russell’s figures of 3.5-0-31-3 and Chase’s economical 4-0-19-3 ensured the USA batters never got a foothold in the game. Early breakthroughs by these bowlers put the USA on the back foot, and they couldn’t recover.

USA Struggle to Build Momentum

The USA innings struggled to gain momentum after losing early wickets. Steven Taylor was dismissed for just 2 runs, and although Andreis Gous (29) and Nitish Kumar (20) tried to stabilize the innings, their efforts were cut short. Gous was caught by Hope off Alzarri Joseph, and Kumar was trapped leg-before by Gudakesh Motie. The remaining USA batters failed to make significant contributions, with skipper Aaron Jones and Corey Anderson falling cheaply to Roston Chase.

Dominant Chase by West Indies

Chasing a target of 129, the West Indies started confidently despite losing Johnson Charles early for 15 runs. Shai Hope then took charge, forming a 67-run partnership with Charles and later an unbeaten 63-run stand with Nicholas Pooran. Pooran supported Hope with a quickfire 27 not out from 13 balls. The aggressive batting ensured that the West Indies reached the target with ease, marking a dominant performance and a crucial win in their T20 World Cup campaign.
