Shimron Hetmyer Sets T20 Cricket World Record

Guyana Amazon Warriors, the defending champions, delivered a massive defeat to St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. They recorded the second-highest team total in Caribbean Premier League (CPL) history, with Shimron Hetmyer playing a key role. Hetmyer scored 91 runs off just 39 balls, setting a T20 cricket world record.

Guyana Amazon Warriors’ Big Win

On September 4, 2024, Guyana Amazon Warriors, who had narrowly won their first game of the CPL 2024, made a big statement. They scored 266 runs in 20 overs, the second-highest total ever in CPL, during their match against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. Hetmyer and Rahmanullah Gurbaz shined, with the team surpassing Jamaica Tallawahs’ previous second-best CPL total of 255 runs.

Hetmyer’s Unique Record

The highlight of the day was Shimron Hetmyer’s incredible performance. He smashed 91 runs in just 39 balls, hitting 11 sixes without a single four. This made him the first player in T20 cricket to hit more than 10 sixes in an innings without hitting any boundaries. Previously, Riki Wessels held the record with nine sixes and no boundaries during a T20 Blast game in 2019 for Nottinghamshire.

Top T20 Sixes Without Fours

  • 11 sixes: Shimron Hetmyer (GAW vs SKN, 2024) – 91 off 39 balls
  • 9 sixes: Riki Wessels (Notts vs Worcs, 2018) – 55 off 18 balls
  • 8 sixes: Will Jacks (Surrey vs Kent, 2019) – 64 off 27 balls
  • 8 sixes: Syed Aziz (Malaysia vs Singapore, 2022) – 55 off 20 balls

  • 8 sixes: Heinrich Klaasen (SRH vs KKR, 2024) – 63 off 29 balls

Most Sixes in a T20 Match

The game between Guyana Amazon Warriors and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots also equaled the record for the most sixes in a T20 match, with 42 sixes being hit. Earlier in 2024, the same number of sixes was recorded during a match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Patriots’ Response

In reply to the Warriors’ massive total of 266, Patriots’ captain Andre Fletcher led with an impressive 81 off 33 balls. Despite his strong efforts, the team lacked support from other players and fell short by 40 runs.

This match was a thrilling showcase of power hitting and set new milestones in T20 cricket history.
