Team USA Advances to Men’s Basketball Quarterfinals at 2024 Paris Olympics

Paris Olympics

Team USA won 103-86 against South Sudan on Wednesday, securing their place in the men’s basketball quarterfinals at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Bam Adebayo was the top scorer for the U.S. with 18 points, making 8 of 10 shots, and also had seven rebounds, a steal, and two blocks.

Unlike their previous game against South Sudan in London, Team USA didn’t need a dramatic finish. After falling behind 10-8 in the first quarter, they surged ahead with a 25-4 run. Although South Sudan closed the gap to 10 points in the third quarter, they couldn’t get any closer.

Team USA’s defense was much stronger this time. South Sudan scored only 36 points in the first half, and the U.S. recorded five of their 13 steals in the first quarter.

Nuni Omot led South Sudan with 24 points, and Bul Kuol added 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Carlik Jones, who had a triple-double in London, struggled for the first three quarters, scoring only six points. He finished with 18 points and seven assists.

Jayson Tatum started for Team USA, joining Stephen Curry, Devin Booker, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis. Joel Embiid, who started the earlier games, did not play this time.

Next, Team USA will play Puerto Rico on Saturday at 11:15 a.m. ET, with Team USA currently leading Group C. South Sudan will play Serbia later on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET.

Wham, Bam, Defensive, Bam

Starting Anthony Davis instead of Joel Embiid made Team USA’s defense more flexible. The bench unit, including Jrue Holiday and Derrick White, made a big impact, but Bam Adebayo stood out. Adebayo played a key role in defense and scored 14 of his 18 points before halftime.

Adebayo’s contributions were crucial as he efficiently used his opportunities and played well alongside his teammates. His performance was a highlight, showcasing his ability to impact the game both offensively and defensively.

Team USA’s Growing Chemistry

In international tournaments, the U.S. often faces challenges with team chemistry. To address this, USA Basketball scheduled five exhibition games before the Paris Olympics. The team now looks more cohesive, with a focus on defense and ball movement.

Team USA’s offense was balanced in the win against South Sudan. Six players scored in double digits, and the team had 29 assists on 37 made field goals. They will need to maintain this level of play when Joel Embiid returns to the lineup.
