Tom Banton played a key role in Somerset’s thrilling victory over Surrey in the County Championship Division One, but a serious ankle injury has made him doubtful for the T20 Blast semi-final against the same team this weekend. Banton rolled his ankle while playing football during warm-ups, and Somerset’s head coach, Jason Kerr, revealed the injury was “pretty serious.”
Somerset’s Dramatic Win Comes at a Cost
Despite the injury, Banton contributed significantly by scoring 46 runs in Somerset’s second innings, batting at No. 11. He helped put together a crucial last-wicket partnership of 71 with Craig Overton. In the final session, Surrey collapsed from 95 for 3 to 109 all out, giving Somerset a stunning victory just minutes before the end of play. This result reduced Surrey’s lead at the top to eight points.
Kerr Expresses Doubts About Banton’s Availability
Kerr confirmed that Banton would travel with the team for the T20 Finals Day, but he is unlikely to play due to the seriousness of his ankle injury. They are awaiting the results of a scan to understand the full extent of the damage. Kerr said, “Tom is an amazing player, but we also have James Rew, who will likely step in and keep wicket for us. James has a bright future across all formats.“

Other Standout Performances for Somerset
In addition to Banton, Archie Vaughan and Jack Leach were crucial in Somerset’s win. Vaughan, son of former England captain Michael Vaughan, took 11 wickets in only his second first-class match, while Leach claimed 9 wickets. Banton had earlier top-scored with 132 in the first innings.
Somerset’s Triple Trophy Dream Still Alive
Somerset captain Lewis Gregory praised his team’s effort, especially in the last few moments of the match. He described the win as “very special” and acknowledged the hard work involved in securing it. Somerset is still in contention for three trophies, having reached the One-Day Cup final and now progressing in the Championship race.
Gregory also spoke highly of Vaughan, calling him “a special cricketer” with both batting and bowling potential. He mentioned Leach’s resilience, noting his personal challenges and celebrating his return to the England squad.
Surrey Coach Reflects on Loss
Despite the loss, Surrey head coach Gareth Batty remained positive, noting that his team is still in control of the title race with two games remaining. He acknowledged the team’s lapse in concentration in the last hour but was pleased with their overall performance. Batty also congratulated Archie Vaughan on his strong showing and expressed confidence heading into their upcoming matches.
Looking forward to the T20 Finals Day, Batty said it would be a different format, but both teams have performed well throughout the tournament and will face each other again in the semi-final.
