The Indian cricket team is enjoying a rare month-long break after their ODI series against Sri Lanka. On Wednesday, the BCCI revealed the squads for the first round of the Duleep Trophy 2024-25, featuring several prominent Indian players.
The tournament, starting September 5, will have four teams: India A, B, C, and D. Despite the break, the BCCI has rested certain senior players, leaving some big names absent from the squads. KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, and Kuldeep Yadav will play in the Duleep Trophy’s first round before the Bangladesh Test series.
Here, we’ll discuss 5 Big Names Missing from the Duleep Trophy 2024-25 squads.
1. Rohit Sharma
Sharma, who captains India in Test and ODI formats, is missing from the recently announced squads. This isn’t unexpected, given that India has a lengthy Test season ahead. With his crucial role as captain and key batsman, India has opted to rest him to ensure he stays fresh for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia.
Similar to Rohit Sharma, experienced batsman Virat Kohli has been rested from the Duleep Trophy. The BCCI selectors believe that Kohli’s experience is vital and want him to stay mentally sharp for future challenges. India has several important matches ahead, including three Test series, an ODI series against England, and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.
3. Ravichandran Ashwin
Veteran off-spinner R Ashwin recently had an outstanding performance in the TNPL 2024, guiding his team to victory. Although he usually participates in this tournament annually, they have given him a break from the Duleep Trophy 2024-25. It seems that India is aiming to keep their top spinner in top condition for the upcoming ten Test matches over the next few months.
Veteran Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been sidelined since the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final last November. After injuring his ankle, he had surgery in February. Now in recovery, Shami has begun bowling in practice sessions. India remains cautious about his return, so he might not play until the upcoming home Test series against Bangladesh.
5. Jasprit Bumrah
India is being cautious with Jasprit Bumrah, using him only in crucial matches and series. Since he played a key role in India’s victory at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Bumrah has been resting. He has prolonged his break and is expected to return for the Test series against Bangladesh.
