Top 5 Economical T20 World Cup Spells

Economical T20 World Cup Spells

Uganda celebrated a big win at the T20 World Cup, their first ever. They beat Papua New Guinea in a close match. Uganda’s bowler, Frank Nsubuga, aged 43, also made history by bowling the most economical spell ever in T20 World Cup history. This tournament has seen low scores because batters find it hard to adjust to the pitches, while bowlers, both fast and spin, are shining.

Let’s see the top five most economical bowling spells in T20 World Cup history

5. Wanindu Hasaranga – 3/8

In a cricket match between Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates at Geelong during the 2022 T20 World Cup, the bowlers who spin the ball were the stars.

In the first part of the game, Sri Lanka had a tough time facing leg-spinner Karthik Meiyappan, who took three wickets in a row. But thanks to Pathum Nissanka’s strong batting, Sri Lanka managed to score 152 runs.

United Arab Emirates struggled to chase this score. They lost many wickets early and couldn’t recover. Eventually, they were all out for 73 runs. Wanindu Hasaranga was the best bowler, taking three wickets and giving away only eight runs. Sri Lanka won the match.

4. Mahmudullah – 1/8

Bangladesh played their first match in the 2014 T20 World Cup against Afghanistan. They chose to bowl first and did really well. Afghanistan could only score 72 runs before all their players were out. It was the first time Bangladesh had done this in T20 matches.

Mahmudullah bowled exceptionally well, giving away only eight runs in four overs. Shakib Al Hasan also took three wickets quickly.

Bangladesh easily chased down the target of 72 runs in just 12 overs. It was a great start to their campaign in the tournament.

3. Ajantha Mendis – 6/8

Ajantha Mendis played really well in a cricket match. He hadn’t played for a while, but when he came back in the 2012 T20 World Cup, he did amazingly. He took six wickets and only gave away eight runs, which was a new record.

In the match against Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka won in a great way. The pitch was good for spinners, and Sri Lanka’s spin bowlers did a fantastic job. Zimbabwe had to chase 183 runs to win, but they struggled a lot. Ajantha Mendis and Jeevan Mendis, both bowled really well, making it hard for Zimbabwe to score.

Ajantha Mendis bowled brilliantly. His tricky deliveries confused the Zimbabwe batsmen, and he got six of them out. He kept aiming at the stumps and took wickets of some important players like Hamilton Masakadza, Vusi Sibanda, Brendan Taylor, Elton Chigumbara, Prosper Utseya, and Kyle Jarvis.

2. Anrich Nortje – 4/7

South Africa had a great start in the 2024 T20 World Cup by beating Sri Lanka easily. They bowled out Sri Lanka for their lowest score ever in T20 cricket. The pitch was tough to play on, but South Africa’s batters managed to chase down the target of 78 runs in less than 17 overs.

Anrich Nortje was the star bowler for South Africa in this match. He bowled exceptionally well, taking 4 wickets for just 7 runs. This was his best performance since coming back from an injury. Nortje bowled really fast, sometimes reaching speeds of 150kph. He also used slower deliveries cleverly to confuse the Sri Lankan batters, causing them to struggle throughout their innings.

1. Frank Nsubuga – 2/4

On Wednesday, June 5th, Frank Nsubuga, who is 43 years old and the oldest player in the 2024 T20 World Cup, made history. His team Uganda won against Papua New Guinea, marking their first-ever victory in a T20 World Cup.

Nsubuga bowled exceptionally well and achieved the most economical bowling performance (all four overs) in T20 World Cup history. He took two wickets and gave away just four runs on a slow pitch at Providence Stadium in Guyana.

His performance surpassed Anrich Nortje’s record of 4 wickets for 7 runs, which was set a few days earlier in the tournament against Sri Lanka in New York.
