5 Legendary Captains Who Failed to Win an ICC Trophy

Winning an ICC trophy is a big achievement for any team. There are four ICC tournaments right now: the ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, Champions Trophy, and World Test Championship. All the best international teams compete in these tournaments, so winning one means being world champions.

When a team wins an ICC tournament, the captain gets a lot of praise. Many captains have led their teams to win an ICC trophy in the past. However, some great captains never won an ICC title for their teams.

Here, we will look at 5 legendary captains who couldn’t win an ICC trophy.

5. Vivian Richards

Former West Indies cricketer Vivian Richards is the first player on this list. He was the captain of the West Indies team from 1980 to 1991. During his time as captain, he led the team in 105 One Day International (ODI) matches. The team won 67 of these matches, lost 36, and 2 ended in a tie. However, Richards was not able to lead the team to win an ICC trophy.

4. Graeme Smith

Graeme Smith is another player on this list. He was the captain of the South African cricket team from 2003 to 2011. He led the team in 150 One Day International (ODI) matches. Under his leadership, South Africa won 92 matches and lost 51. His win percentage was 64.23%. However, he did not win any ICC trophies as captain.

3. AB de Villiers

AB de Villiers is a former South African cricket player. He was the team captain from 2012 to 2017. He led the team in 103 One Day Internationals (ODIs), winning 59 and losing 39 matches, with a win rate of 60.10%. However, he did not win any ICC trophies. In the 2015 ODI World Cup, his South African team lost to New Zealand in the semi-final.

2. Mahela Jayawardene

Mahela Jayawardene is also on this list. He was the captain of the Sri Lanka cricket team from 2004 to 2013. During his time as captain, he led the team in 129 One Day Internationals (ODIs), winning 71 and losing 49, with a win rate of 59.09%. However, he did not win any ICC trophies for the team. He also captained Sri Lanka in 19 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), winning 12 and losing 6.

1. Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli is another player in this list. He led the Indian cricket team in 95 one-day international (ODI) matches from 2013 to 2021, winning 65 games and losing 27, with a win percentage of 70.43%. In Twenty20 internationals (T20Is), he captained the team in 50 matches, winning 30 and losing 16. However, Kohli never won an ICC trophy as captain. Under his leadership, India lost the final to Pakistan in the 2017 Champions Trophy and the final to New Zealand in the 2019-21 ICC World Test Championship.
