Vinesh Phogat’s Weight Controversy

PT Usha Dinshaw Paudiwala issuing a statement

Vinesh Phogat, one of India’s top wrestlers, was disqualified from the Paris Olympic Games due to being overweight by about 100 grams in the 50 kg category. She was preparing for her gold medal match when she failed the morning weigh-in. Dr. Dinshaw Paudiwala, the Chief Medical Officer for the Indian contingent, explained the situation, noting that Vinesh’s weight increased more than expected after her three bouts on Tuesday. Despite extreme efforts to reduce the weight in time, it could not be achieved.

Efforts to Cut Weight

In a video statement, Dr. Paudiwala and Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha explained the weight cut process. Wrestlers often compete in weight categories lower than their natural weight to gain an advantage over less strong opponents. The weight-cutting process involves restricting food and water intake, combined with sweating through saunas and exercise. While this helps achieve a lower weight, it can also cause weakness and energy depletion, affecting performance.

After the weigh-in, athletes usually undergo energy restoration with controlled water intake and high-energy foods. Vinesh’s nutritionist calculated her specific needs, typically about 1.5 kilograms over the day, to provide enough energy for her matches. After her three bouts, Vinesh needed some water to prevent dehydration, which contributed to her weight gain.

Measures Taken and Disqualification

Vinesh’s coach used the usual weight-cut process that had worked for her previously, confident it would succeed overnight. However, despite all efforts, including drastic measures like cutting her hair and shortening her clothes, Vinesh’s weight remained 100 grams over the 50 kg limit. Consequently, she was disqualified from the competition.

Medical Precautions and Vinesh’s Reaction

As a precaution, Vinesh received intravenous fluids to prevent dehydration. Her vital parameters were normal, and she felt physically well throughout the weight-cutting process. However, she expressed disappointment over the disqualification, especially since it was her third Olympics. Despite being physically and medically fit, the disqualification ended her chance to compete for a medal at the Paris Games. Vinesh’s disqualification has been a significant blow to her and Indian fans, highlighting the challenges athletes face in maintaining weight categories in competitive sports.
