West Indies Beat New Zealand Qualify for Super 8s in T20 World Cup

T20 WC 2024: West Indies beat New Zealand by 13 runs

West Indies Secure Spot in Super 8s

The West Indies have qualified for the Super 8s in the T20 World Cup 2024 after defeating New Zealand by 13 runs in a crucial Group C match in Tarouba. This victory is significant as it eliminates New Zealand, who were runners-up in a previous edition and semifinalists in the last tournament. This win is West Indies’ third consecutive victory, ensuring their place in the next stage of the tournament. This achievement is even more remarkable considering they missed the main round of the last T20 World Cup in Australia.

Sherfane Rutherford’s Heroic Performance

Sherfane Rutherford played a vital role in the West Indies’ victory. He delivered an outstanding performance, scoring an unbeaten 68 runs from 39 balls. His innings included six sixes and two fours, significantly boosting the West Indies’ total to 149 for 9. At one point, the team was struggling at 76 for 7 in 12.3 overs, but Rutherford’s exceptional batting turned the game around and gave the West Indies a defendable score.

West Indies’ Bowling Dominance

In response to the West Indies’ total, New Zealand struggled and were restricted to 136 for 9 in 19 overs. The West Indies’ bowlers performed excellently, with left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie taking 3 wickets for 25 runs. However, it was pacer Alzarri Joseph who led the attack, claiming 4 wickets for just 19 runs. Their combined efforts ensured that New Zealand fell short of the target, securing the West Indies’ place in the Super 8s.

New Zealand’s Efforts Fall Short

Despite a fighting effort, New Zealand couldn’t chase down the target set by the West Indies. Glenn Phillips was the top scorer for New Zealand, contributing 40 runs off 33 balls. However, his efforts were not enough to lead his team to victory. The West Indies’ strong bowling performance and Rutherford’s crucial innings were decisive factors in their win, ultimately knocking New Zealand out of the tournament.
