West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel has announced his retirement from international cricket after a career that spanned over 12 years. Gabriel played 86 matches across all three formats for the West Indies.
Career Highlights and Statement
Gabriel, known for his powerful bowling and ability to generate seam movement, was primarily a Test match player. Throughout his career, he took 202 wickets, with 166 of those coming from 59 Test matches. His best performance in a Test match was taking 8 wickets for 62 runs. Gabriel and fellow fast bowler Kemar Roach formed a strong partnership as the new ball bowlers for the West Indies in Test cricket.
In a message shared on Instagram, Gabriel expressed his gratitude for his time in international cricket, saying, “Playing for the West Indies has brought me immense joy, but all good things must come to an end. I am thankful to God for the blessings and opportunities given to me and my family during this journey.“
He also thanked the administrators, coaches, staff, teammates, and supporters for their dedication and support throughout his career.
Plans After Retirement
Despite retiring from international cricket, Gabriel confirmed that he will continue to play for his local team, Trinidad and Tobago, and will also be available for franchise leagues around the world. “I plan to keep playing for my country, club, and franchise teams with the same passion I have always shown,” Gabriel said.
Notable Moments and Controversy
Gabriel’s career had its ups and downs. One of his most memorable moments was in 2017 when he was bowled by Yasir Shah while attempting a sweep shot in the final moments of a Test match against Pakistan in Dominica. In 2019, he was banned for four ODIs after using a homophobic slur during an on-field altercation with Joe Root in St. Lucia.
Gabriel’s announcement marks the end of a significant chapter in West Indies cricket.
