Rahul Dravid will continue coaching the Indian cricket team until the T20 World Cup ends in June 2024. After that, a new coach will take over until December 31, 2027. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already started looking for applicants for the job, with a deadline of May 27.
Various names are being considered for the position, including Stephen Fleming, Ricky Ponting, and Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir, who used to play for Kolkata Knight Riders, was approached by the BCCI. However, there are concerns about whether his coaching style would be suitable for the team, especially if there are many experienced players.
Aakash Chopra, Gambhir’s former teammate from Delhi, raised this concern. He described Gambhir as a strong and straightforward person who knows how to build a team but noted that his coaching style might be too strict, like that of a strict father. Chopra suggested that Gambhir’s approach might not be the best fit for a team with many senior players who might need a more supportive and collaborative coach.
Despite not having previous coaching experience at the domestic level, Gambhir served as a mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants in 2022 and 2023 before joining Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024. Under his mentorship, both teams reached the playoffs. As a player, Gambhir was part of the Indian teams that won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the ODI World Cup in 2011, contributing significantly to both victories.
