Will Removing Impact Player Rule Lower IPL Scores DC Coach Ricky Ponting Weighs In

Ricky Ponting, who is the head coach of Delhi Capitals and used to lead the Australian cricket team. And thinks that even if they take away the controversial ‘Impact Player’ rule from the IPL. We’ll still see a lot of high-scoring matches. This rule lets teams swap one player from their starting lineup during a match. Some people, like Rohit Sharma, worry it’s unfair to all-rounders who may not get a chance to bowl. Others, like Sourav Ganguly, think it’s a good idea.

Ricky Ponting, talked about this during an event where they launched the autobiography of Delhi Capitals’ batting coach Pravin Amre. He believes that even without the Impact Player rule, batsmen will still play aggressively. He said that trying to make players change their style during a game, like being defensive, wouldn’t work.

This year in the IPL, teams have scored over 200 runs in a match 36 times, just one less than last year. The BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, said they might reconsider the rule after this IPL season.

Ponting also spoke about the difficulties of coaching a team like Delhi Capitals, which has players from different countries. He thinks it’s harder than coaching a national team because there’s less time to build team culture and make technical changes.

Talking about how cricket is changing, Ponting mentioned that traditional batting techniques are becoming less common. He mentioned players like Virat Kohli and Joe Root who still use traditional techniques, but overall, more players are adopting aggressive styles.

During the same event, Pravin Amre shared a coaching story, highlighting the importance of having a good mentor. He remembered a match where his team was struggling but managed to turn things around, showing the value of belief and teamwork. This inspired the title of his book, “Zero FOR 5: The Thrilling Cricket Journey of Pravin Amre.” He said, “…but the whole team believed that they could come out of that, and they did it. As a coach, I was very proud of that. They went on to win that game and also the championship, hence I chose that title for the book.”
