Mauricio Pochettino Appointed as New USMNT Head Coach

Mauricio Pochettino has been named the new manager of the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT), as announced by the U.S. Soccer Federation on Tuesday. Pochettino, 52, has signed a two-year contract that will keep him in charge until the 2026 World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host with Canada and Mexico. He replaces Gregg Berhalter, who was let go after a disappointing performance by the USMNT at this summer’s Copa América.

Pochettino will be introduced on Friday in New York.

USSF’s Statement

Matt Crocker, USSF sporting director, praised Pochettino for his successful track record and passion for player development. Crocker expressed confidence that Pochettino is the right choice to unlock the potential of the talented USMNT squad. The USSF is excited about Pochettino’s appointment as they aim for success on the global stage.

Pochettino’s Background

Pochettino is well-regarded in the coaching world. He has managed top clubs like Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea. He has worked with notable players including Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Harry Kane. Previously, he also managed Southampton and Espanyol, where he had a significant playing career.

In a statement, Pochettino shared his excitement about the opportunity, citing the energy and passion surrounding the USMNT as major factors in his decision. He is eager to build something special with the team.

Salary and Financial Details

Pochettino will earn $6 million per year, making him the highest-paid coach in USMNT history. This salary is a reduction from his previous position at Chelsea.

Challenges and Expectations

The USMNT has faced recent struggles, including underperformance at the 2024 Copa América and a recent loss to Canada. Pochettino will have to quickly address these issues and prepare the team for the 2026 World Cup. His first games in charge will be friendlies against Panama and Mexico next month.

Pochettino, originally from Murphy, Argentina, had a notable career as a player and began his professional journey with Newell’s Old Boys before moving to clubs like Espanyol, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bordeaux.
