Speaking on The Wild Project on YouTube (via AS), La Liga president Javier Tebas praised FC Barcelona for their efforts in lowering their wage bill. He also confirmed that the club is getting closer to complying with the 1:1 Financial Fair Play rule.
A Challenging Summer for Barcelona
This summer was tough for Barcelona as they struggled to meet the 1:1 rule. The main reasons were delays in finalizing their agreement with Nike and finding a new investor for the Barça Vision project. However, despite these challenges, the club successfully reduced their wage bill, and their salary cap has improved, as La Liga announced earlier this month.
Tebas praised Barcelona president Joan Laporta and his team for their efforts, saying, “Barcelona is not in as bad a position as people think. When Laporta took over, the club declared a loss of €560 million. Someone had to step in. They also had a wage bill of €600 million.“
Nearing the 1:1 Rule
Tebas continued, “Without allowing them to sign new players, they can’t sell the ones they have. That’s why we introduced the 60% rule. Right now, Barcelona is close to reaching the 1:1 rule. When Barcelona’s financial moves were restricted, many other clubs wanted to follow the same path.“
He expressed hope that Barcelona would fully comply with the 1:1 rule by January, saying, “The Nike deal will help them a lot. They’ve already cut €200 million from their wage bill, which is a massive amount.“

Tebas on His Relationship with Laporta
During the interview, Tebas also spoke about his relationship with Laporta, saying that he sometimes finds the Barcelona president too optimistic. “He is very optimistic. He should tone it down and be more cautious. As La Liga president, my goal is not to get along with club presidents,” Tebas remarked.
Finally, Tebas commented that he expects Barcelona to face consequences related to the Negreira case, potentially involving charges of sports corruption.
