Alongside these innovations are LED stumps and bails, which have replaced wooden ones in many major tournaments, including the IPL. These LED stumps have drawn some criticism, with debates on whether they work as effectively as their wooden counterparts. Even cricket betting sites have had to adjust their rules for the new stumps.
The LED stumps are made from top-quality materials like polyurethane or fiberglass, making them durable, but bowlers still manage to break them, sometimes even spinners.

How Do LED Stumps Work?
First introduced in Australia’s Big Bash League in 2013, LED stumps quickly made their way into international cricket. The lights in the bails make it easier for officials to decide when a batsman is dismissed, as they flash only when both ends of the bail lose contact with the stumps. This feature allows for precise decisions, with the lights turning on in just 1/1000th of a second after the bail is knocked off.
Who Makes These Stumps, and How Much Do They Cost?
An Australian company, Zing International, produces the LED stumps and bails for the IPL. According to reports, a set of LED stumps costs the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) around $40,000 (₹3,342,780). This includes six stumps and four bails, with each stump and bail set costing roughly $4,000 (₹334,278).
Interestingly, the BCCI doesn’t own these stumps outright; they rent them from Zing International. Other companies like StumpVision and Intelliconn also produce similar LED stumps, priced between $5,000 and $20,000 (₹417,847 to ₹1,671,390).
Arshdeep Singh’s Over Highlights the High Cost of Stumps
During the 2023 IPL season, Arshdeep Singh delivered a game-changing final over against the Mumbai Indians. His fast deliveries shattered two middle stumps, sparking discussions on social media about the cost of these expensive LED stumps. Despite the Punjab Kings winning the game by 13 runs, Singh’s bowling made the stumps quite costly for the BCCI.
