BCCI Secretary Jay Shah Reveals: Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar Made Decision to Exclude Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from Central Contracts”
The Secretary Jay Shah disclosed that it was Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, who made the call to remove Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from the list of centrally-contracted players. This decision stemmed from Kishan and Iyer’s absence from domestic matches despite BCCI directives. Kishan took a break post-ODI World Cup and only returned for the IPL, while Iyer participated in some Ranji Trophy matches but attended a Kolkata Knight Riders camp during a crucial fixture.
Jay Shah, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary, recently shed light on his role within the organization, emphasizing that he primarily executes decisions rather than formulating them. He specifically mentioned Ajit Agarkar’s authority in decisions related to player contracts. Shah underscored the significance of domestic cricket, reiterating the principle that no player holds an irreplaceable position.
Previously, Shah had expressed support for the selectors’ choices concerning players who neglected domestic cricket. He affirmed engaging in discussions with the omitted players, stressing the importance of their participation in domestic tournaments if they seek national selection. Additionally, he emphasized the necessity of consistent performance as a crucial criterion for inclusion in the national team.
Regarding a conversation with Ishan Kishan following a Mumbai Indians match, Shah clarified that it was informal and devoid of any advisory content directed towards the player. Dismissing speculations about potential increases in match fees for domestic players, he stated categorically that there were no such plans. Shah highlighted previous increments in pay, notably citing a 100% raise in 2022 as evidence of the board’s commitment to player welfare.
