Complete List of IPL Champions and Their Captains

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are the two most successful teams in the IPL, each with five championship titles. Here’s the list of IPL winners from 2008 to 2023.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the most popular cricket leagues globally. Since it began in 2008, it has become a worldwide sensation, thrilling fans with exciting matches and showcasing world-class cricket talent.

Year by Year Breakdown

IPL

2008

The Rajasthan Royals became the first IPL champions, defeating the Chennai Super Kings by three wickets. Yusuf Pathan shined with a 39-ball 56 and took 3 wickets for 22 runs, earning him the Player of the Match award. The game went down to the last ball, but Shane Warne’s team emerged victorious.

2009

In the second season, the Deccan Chargers, led by Adam Gilchrist, claimed victory by defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore by six runs. Anil Kumble from RCB was named the Player of the Match despite his team’s loss.

2010

Arch-rivals Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings faced off in the 2010 final, where Chennai won by 22 runs, marking MS Dhoni’s first IPL title.

2011

Chennai Super Kings defended their title in 2011, winning back-to-back championships by defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore by 58 runs. Murali Vijay’s 95 off 52 balls earned him the Player of the Match honor.

2012

Kolkata Knight Riders won their first title in 2012, chasing down Chennai’s 190 with two balls remaining. Manvinder Bisla’s heroic 89 earned him the Player of the Match, while Sunil Narine was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

2013

Mumbai Indians secured their first IPL title in 2013 under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, beating Chennai by 23 runs. Kieron Pollard’s 60 off 32 balls was instrumental in the win, earning him the Player of the Match award.

2014

Kolkata Knight Riders claimed their second title by defeating Kings XI Punjab in the final. Manish Pandey’s 94 led the team to a thrilling three-wicket win, and he was named Player of the Match.

2015

In 2015, Mumbai Indians once again triumphed over Chennai Super Kings, winning by 41 runs. This was the third time the two teams met in an IPL final, and Mumbai successfully defended their score of 202.

2016

Sunrisers Hyderabad won their first IPL title in 2016 by defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore by seven runs. Despite RCB’s strong chase, SRH held their nerve to clinch the trophy.

2017

Mumbai Indians edged out Rising Pune Supergiant by just one run in the 2017 final, claiming their third IPL title. Krunal Pandya’s 47 earned him the Player of the Match.

2018

Chennai Super Kings lifted their third IPL trophy in 2018, beating Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets. Shane Watson’s unbeaten 117 was the standout performance.

2019

Mumbai Indians won a nail-biting 2019 final by just one run against Chennai Super Kings, securing their fourth title. Jasprit Bumrah’s exceptional bowling earned him the Player of the Match award.

2020

Mumbai Indians retained their title in 2020, defeating Delhi Capitals by five wickets. This marked Mumbai’s fifth IPL championship.

2021

Chennai Super Kings captured their fourth title in 2021 by beating Kolkata Knight Riders by 27 runs. It was a complete team effort that led to their victory.

2022

Debutant team Gujarat Titans, under Hardik Pandya’s leadership, won the 2022 IPL title by defeating Rajasthan Royals twice in the playoffs. Pandya was also the Player of the Match in the final.

2023

Chennai Super Kings equaled Mumbai’s record with their fifth title in 2023. Rain affected the final, and the match result was decided by the DLS method. Devon Conway’s 47 from 25 balls earned him the Player of the Match award.
