Hat tricks in the T20 World Cup from 2007 to 2024

In the first T20 World Cup held in 2007, Brett Lee made history by being the first bowler to achieve a hat-trick in the tournament. Fast forward to the 2024 T20 World Cup, where Pat Cummins took two hat-tricks in back-to-back matches.

Brett Lee – Australia vs Bangladesh, 2007

Brett Lee, one of Australia’s best fast bowlers, made history by taking the first hat-trick in the T20 World Cup against Bangladesh in 2007. He took three wickets in a row in the 17th over at Newlands, Cape Town, dismissing Shakib Al Hasan, Mashrafe Mortaza, and Alok Kapali. His figures were 3 wickets for 27 runs. This helped Australia defeat Bangladesh comfortably by nine wickets.

Wanindu Hasaranga – Sri Lanka vs South Africa, 2021

At the 2021 T20 World Cup, Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga became the third player to take a hat-trick. He achieved this during a Super 12 match against South Africa at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, taking the wickets of Temba Bavuma, Aiden Markram, and Dwaine Pretorius, finishing with 3/20. Despite his hat-trick, Sri Lanka couldn’t defend their total of 142 runs.

Curtis Campher – Ireland vs Netherlands, 2021

In a Group A Qualifier match at the 2021 T20 World Cup, Ireland’s Curtis Campher took four wickets in four balls against the Netherlands. He dismissed Colin Ackermann, Ryan ten Doeschate, Scott Edwards, and Pieter Seelaar, ending his spell with figures of 4/26. Ireland won the match easily after bowling the Netherlands out for 106 runs.

Joshua Little – Ireland vs New Zealand, 2022

During a Super 12 match at the 2022 T20 World Cup, Joshua Little from Ireland achieved a hat-trick in the 19th over against New Zealand, dismissing Kane Williamson, James Neesham, and Mitchell Santner with figures of 3/22. However, Ireland lost the match as New Zealand scored 185 runs.

Kagiso Rabada – South Africa vs England, 2021

Kagiso Rabada took a hat-trick against England in the 2021 T20 World Cup, dismissing Chris Woakes, Eoin Morgan, and Chris Jordan with figures of 3/48. This helped South Africa win the match by 10 runs, successfully defending their total of 189 runs.

Karthik Meiyappan – UAE vs Sri Lanka, 2022

Karthik Meiyappan took the first hat-trick of the 2022 T20 World Cup against Sri Lanka. Bowling at Simonds Stadium, he dismissed Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Charith Asalanka, and Dasun Shanaka with figures of 3/19. Despite his performance, the UAE lost the match by 79 runs.

Pat Cummins – Australia vs Afghanistan, 2024

After defeating Bangladesh, Pat Cummins took another hat-trick against Afghanistan, becoming the first bowler to achieve two hat-tricks in one T20 World Cup. He dismissed Rashid Khan, Karim Janat, and Gulbadin Naib with figures of 3/28. Unfortunately, Afghanistan won the match by 21 runs.

Chris Jordan – England vs USA, 2024

Chris Jordan took the second hat-trick of the 2024 T20 World Cup in a match against the USA, achieving four wickets in five balls and finishing with 4/10 in 2.5 overs. His performance helped England bowl out the USA for 115 runs, and they chased down the target in just 9.4 overs.

Pat Cummins – Australia vs Bangladesh, 2024

Pat Cummins took the first hat-trick of the 2024 T20 World Cup against Bangladesh in a Super 8 match. In the 18th over, he dismissed Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan, and Taskin Ahmed, finishing with figures of 3/29. Cummins’ effort, along with Adam Zampa’s 2/24, helped Australia restrict Bangladesh to 140 runs, and they won the match by 28 runs via the DLS method. Cummins is currently one of the top wicket-takers for Australia in T20Is, with 66 wickets in 57 matches.
