In the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) got a good chance to enter the playoffs. This happened because the Delhi Capitals (DC) defeated the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Tuesday. With this win, LSG can’t get ahead of RCB in the points table even if they win their last match. DC’s Net Run Rate is also not good enough to secure a top 4 spot. Now, the only team standing between RCB and a playoff spot is the Chennai Super Kings.
Currently, RCB is in 6th place in the points table. They have won 6 matches out of 13, earning 12 points with a Net Run Rate of +0.387. The Delhi Capitals are in 5th place with 14 points from 14 matches and a Net Run Rate of -0.377.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad hold the 4th position. They still have two matches left to play in the league. They have 14 points and a Net Run Rate of +0.406. Chennai Super Kings are in 3rd place with 14 points from 13 matches and a Net Run Rate of +0.528.
How RCB Can Qualify For IPL 2024 Playoffs
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) must win their upcoming match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to have any chance of reaching the top 4 in the playoffs. If they lose, they’re out of contention.
Scenario 1: If RCB beats CSK but still has a lower Net Run Rate, they need Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to lose both their remaining matches. SRH plays against Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings. If SRH loses both, they’ll stay at 14 points. RCB, with a win against CSK, will also have 14 points. In this case, RCB just needs a better Net Run Rate than SRH’s to qualify alongside CSK.
Scenario 2: If SRH wins one of their next two matches, they’re in the playoffs. RCB can then only dislodge CSK from the top 4. If SRH qualifies, RCB needs to win against CSK by around 18 runs if they bat first and score 200. If they chase, they need to do it with about 11 balls to spare after being given a target of 201. In this scenario, RCB and SRH will both qualify.
