The Royal Challengers Bangalore RCB had to cancel their only practice session before the IPL 2024 Eliminator against Rajasthan Royals (RR) due to security concerns. This decision came after a security threat involving Virat Kohli. The practice was scheduled for Tuesday at the Gujarat College Ground in Ahmedabad but was called off.
No Press Conference Held
RCB also canceled the press conference planned for the eve of the Eliminator match. The decision left many puzzled, but it was taken due to the same security reasons.
Arrests in Ahmedabad
The Gujarat Police hinted that the cancellation was primarily due to concerns for Virat Kohli’s safety. Four people were arrested in Ahmedabad on suspicion of terrorist activities. The police informed both IPL teams, RCB and RR, about the threat. RCB decided to cancel all activities for the day, while Rajasthan Royals continued with their schedule.
Statement from Police
“Virat Kohli learned about the arrests after arriving in Ahmedabad. He is a national treasure, and his security is our utmost priority,” said police officer Vijay Singha Jwala. “RCB did not want to take a risk. They informed us that there would be no practice session. Rajasthan Royals were also informed but had no issues proceeding with their practice.”
Enhanced Security Measures
The police increased security at RCB’s team hotel. Even IPL-accredited members were not allowed to enter. A ‘green corridor’ was created for the Rajasthan Royals to reach the training ground safely. Players like R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Riyan Parag chose to stay at the hotel and skip practice. Captain Sanju Samson arrived late at the ground.
Expected Security for the Match
Strict security measures are expected for the IPL 2024 Eliminator between RCB and RR on Wednesday to ensure the safety of all players and attendees.
