Memorable Events in Cricket World Cup History

The Cricket World Cup, held every four years, is a big event where cricket legends are made and history is changed. Since it started in 1975, this important event has had many memorable moments that fans around the world will never forget.

Here, we look back at five of the most famous moments in the tournament’s history

5. MS Dhoni’s sad semi-final runout, World Cup 2019

In the 2019 World Cup semi-final between India and New Zealand, a crucial moment came when MS Dhoni, a key player for India, was running to the crease. Martin Guptill from New Zealand threw the ball quickly and accurately, hitting the stumps just before Dhoni could make it. This moment crushed the hopes of over a billion Indian fans. About a year later, Dhoni retired from international cricket, making this his last big memory on the world stage.

4. Kapil Dev’s running catch to win a final, World Cup 1983

Before the 1983 World Cup final, most people thought Team India had no chance against the West Indies, who were aiming for their third straight win, at Lord’s. But Kapil Dev’s team kept surprising everyone and eventually won the title.

One key moment in the final was when the Indian captain, running at full speed, made an amazing catch to get West Indies legend Viv Richards out. This led to a huge collapse in the West Indies batting lineup, and they ended up losing by 43 runs to the determined Indian team.

3. Klusener-Donald semifinal runout, World Cup 1999

South Africa, often known for not performing well in the World Cup, were close to reaching the final in their exciting 1999 semifinal against Australia. However, a confusing mix-up between Lance Klusener, who was eager to run, and Allan Donald, who hesitated, led to a heartbreaking runout. This mistake cost South Africa the match and ended their World Cup hopes once again.

Australia, despite the match ending in a tie, advanced to the finals because they had a better net run rate throughout the tournament.

2. Ben Stokes accidental deflection, World Cup 2019

In the 2019 World Cup final at Lord’s, England was struggling to chase New Zealand’s 241 runs. Ben Stokes, the star of the match, had a lucky moment in the last over. While diving to complete a second run, the ball hit his bat and went to the boundary. These unexpected runs tied the game and led to a historic Super Over win for England.
