Top 5 Run Outs of T20 World Cup 2024

5 Run Outs of T20 World Cup 2024

India celebrated their second T20 World Cup 2024 win after a thrilling match against South Africa at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 29. This victory ended their 11-year wait for an ICC trophy since they won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 under MS Dhoni.

The T20 World Cup 2024 was different. Instead of the usual high scores, the matches had lower scores of 150-170, making the games more intense.

From the start in the USA, the pitches were a hot topic. Many experts criticized the ICC for hosting the World Cup there. The makeshift pitches at the Nassau County International Stadium in New York favored bowlers, and some Caribbean grounds were also tough.

Throughout the T20 World Cup, we saw many emotions from players. Whether it was scoring runs, taking wickets, making catches, or causing run-outs, the excitement was clear. Afghanistan was a standout team, reaching the semi-finals for the first time.

After India’s amazing win, let’s look at the top five run-outs of the T20 World Cup 2024.

5. When Axar Patel was ran out by Quinton de Kock in the T20 World Cup final

It could have been the most crucial run out of the tournament if South Africa had won their first World Cup. Despite South Africa losing, Quinton de Kock’s run out of Axar Patel at a key moment was one of the best in the competition.

India was struggling at 34-3, and losing another wicket could have been disastrous. Virat Kohli and Axar Patel then put together an important 72-run partnership to rescue India from a tough situation. Axar batted well and gave India the momentum they needed in the middle overs.

In the 14th over, bowled by Kagiso Rabada, Kohli missed a flick, and the ball went to the keeper, Quinton de Kock, off his thigh pads. Axar tried to take a single but realized too late that the throw was coming his way. De Kock took advantage of Axar’s hesitation and made a direct hit, catching Axar just short of the crease. Fortunately for India, the run out didn’t cost them the game, as they won by seven runs to clinch the T20 World Cup.

4. Adil Rashid was dismissed by Suryakumar Yadav with a backflick in the T20 World Cup semi-final

India redeemed themselves by defeating defending T20 World Cup champions England convincingly by 68 runs in the second semi-final in Guyana. Batting first, India scored a strong 171 runs. With a solid bowling attack, especially in the powerplay, led by Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah, they restricted England to 35-3 early on.

Rohit Sharma’s impressive half-century, supported by Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya, powered India to victory. Kuldeep Yadav added to England’s woes in the middle overs, reducing them to 86-8. A key moment was Suryakumar Yadav’s swift run-out of Adil Rashid in the 16th over, sealing England’s fate as they fell short of India’s total.

3. Jos Buttler’s incredible direct hit to send Heinrich Klaasen back during the Super Eight encounter

Jos Buttler remains a crucial player for England’s white-ball teams, not just for his batting but also for his leadership and wicket-keeping skills. In a recent T20 World Cup match against South Africa, Buttler showcased his fielding prowess with a stunning run out of Heinrich Klaasen. Despite South Africa’s strong start, Buttler’s sharp reflexes turned the game momentarily in England’s favor. During the 14th over, despite initially fumbling, Buttler recovered swiftly to hit the stumps, catching Klaasen short of his crease. This display of agility highlighted Buttler’s impact beyond his primary roles, even though England eventually lost the match by seven runs.

2. Heinrich Klaasen’s foresight saved the day – Group stage

A team that was close to winning their first T20 World Cup faced a surprising challenge from Nepal. After winning their initial matches against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands, their game against Nepal was expected to be easy.

But Nepal played exceptionally well, limiting South Africa to a low score of 115. Nepal was doing well in their chase until the 14th over, needing 34 runs off 42 balls. However, Tabraiz Shamsi’s bowling turned the match with two crucial wickets.

In the final over, Nepal needed just two runs from two balls. Gulshan Jha missed both deliveries from Ottneil Baartman, and a close play ended with him being run out by a sharp throw from Quinton de Kock to Heinrich Klaasen. Nepal missed their chance to win, losing by a small margin.

1. Anrich Nortje’s direct hit ended Andre Russell’s onslaught in a virtual quarter-final

South Africa and West Indies faced off in a crucial match in Antigua. Aiden Markram won the toss and chose to field first. West Indies struggled early, losing two wickets quickly. Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase stabilized their innings, but another collapse in the 12th over hurt their score.

Despite reaching 86-2, West Indies fell to 97-6 by the 17th over. Andre Russell tried to revive their innings with aggressive batting, hitting a few sixes. In a critical moment, Akeal Hosein played a ball towards third man for a single, but Russell pushed for a risky run and was run out by Anrich Nortje.

This proved decisive as South Africa clinched victory by three wickets, eliminating West Indies from the T20 World Cup.
