Vinesh Phogat Biography

Vinesh Phogat is a shining star in Indian wrestling. Born on August 25, 1994, in Bhiwani, Haryana, Vinesh is the daughter of Mahavir Singh Phogat’s younger brother, Rajpal. She has continued her family’s legacy of wrestling excellence. Vinesh, who is the cousin of Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, has made history by winning gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.

Despite facing strong opposition to wrestling in her village in Haryana, Vinesh has achieved significant success. In 2013, she won a bronze medal in the women’s freestyle 52 kg category at the Asian Wrestling Championships and also earned a silver medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships that same year.

In the 2014 Commonwealth Games, she clinched a gold medal in the 48 kg freestyle category. Vinesh won a silver medal at the Asian Championships in Doha in 2015. Unfortunately, she lost to China’s Sun Yanan due to a knee injury at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

However, Vinesh made a spectacular comeback at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, winning a gold medal in the women’s 50 kg freestyle wrestling. In December 2018, she married her long-time partner and fellow wrestler Somveer Rathi, who is also a two-time national champion.
