Suresh Raina Talks About MS Dhoni’s IPL Future

Suresh Raina has recently shared his thoughts on MS Dhoni’s IPL future amid ongoing speculations. As the 2025 season approaches, there’s a lot of talk about the big names in the league and how player retention might affect them. MS Dhoni’s IPL future as a player for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is a key topic, especially with new retention rules possibly influencing his decision to play another season.

Dhoni’s Performance and Captaincy

Raina, who played many seasons under Dhoni’s captaincy, believes that Dhoni should continue with CSK for the next season. Dhoni had a strong performance in the 2024 season, and Raina thinks Ruturaj Gaikwad, the current captain, still needs time to fully develop his leadership skills. Raina said, “I want MS Dhoni to play in IPL 2025 because of his impressive batting last year. I think Ruturaj Gaikwad needs more time as a captain, especially after the loss to RCB.”

The 2024 IPL Season and Dhoni’s Impact

The 68th game of the 2024 season was a crucial match where CSK and RCB were both fighting to advance to the playoffs. Despite CSK being in a strong position, RCB managed to win and move forward, while CSK missed the playoffs by finishing fifth.

Under Dhoni’s captaincy, CSK won five IPL titles, tying for the most in history. Dhoni stepped down earlier this year, leading to Gaikwad’s appointment as captain. The 2024 season presented challenges for CSK, and Dhoni’s potential return could greatly impact the team’s chances in the 2025 season.

Dhoni’s Future Plans

When asked about his future, Dhoni remained cautious. It was reported that CSK had requested a rule change allowing retired players to be considered uncapped if they had not played international cricket for over five years, but CSK’s CEO, Kasi Viswanath, denied this. Dhoni mentioned, “There’s still time to decide on my IPL future. We need to see what decisions are made regarding player retention. Once the rules are set, I’ll make a decision that’s best for the team.”
