In the 2019 World Cup match between India and England in Birmingham, Mohammed Shami took his first five-wicket haul in ODIs. He made a big impact against England’s strong batting lineup. After England’s opening pair scored 160 runs, Shami dismissed Jonny Bairstow and Eoin Morgan quickly. He then took out Joe Root, Jos Buttler, and Chris Woakes in the final overs. Shami ended with 5-69, including a maiden over in England’s total of 337-7.

During the 2023 World Cup match in Dharamshala, Mohammed Shami achieved his third five-wicket haul in ODIs. He started by removing New Zealand opener Will Young early on. Shami then broke up a 159-run partnership between Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra by dismissing Ravindra. He also took out Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry, and finished by removing centurion Daryl Mitchell. Shami ended with figures of 5-54 and was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his performance.

In the first ODI of the 2023 series in Mohali, Mohammed Shami delivered a match-winning five-wicket haul against Australia. He began by dismissing Mitchell Marsh with the first ball of the match. Shami also removed a set Steve Smith and took the last Australian wickets, ending with figures of 5-51. His bowling kept Australia to 276 runs, allowing India to win easily with contributions from Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, and Suryakumar Yadav.

Mohammed Shami was exceptional against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium during the 2023 World Cup. Defending a target of 358, Shami came in after Mohammed Siraj’s three-wicket spell and took five wickets in just five overs. He dismissed Charith Asalanka and Dushan Hemantha in successive balls and then removed Angelo Matthews with a brilliant delivery. Shami’s career-best ODI figures of 5-18 helped India win by 302 runs, as Sri Lanka was bowled out for just 55 in 19.4 overs.

In the 2023 World Cup semifinal between India and New Zealand, Mohammed Shami made a significant impact. Defending a target of 398 runs, Shami took out both New Zealand openers early. He then dismissed Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell, and Tom Latham for a duck. Shami finished with career-best figures of 7-57 by removing the Kiwi tail. His performance remains the only instance of an Indian bowler taking seven wickets in an ODI innings in World Cup history .
