This poor performance led to fake retirement announcements going viral on social media platform X. The first post appeared on Monday afternoon and was crafted to look like a genuine retirement announcement, confusing many fans.
A second, more impactful post appeared a few hours later from a more prominent account. This post, from the ‘Babar Azam – Parody’ handle, mocked Babar for his approach to preparing batting-friendly pitches during his time as red-ball captain.
Babar’s Recent Struggles
Babar Azam has been experiencing a rough patch over the past year. He lost his ODI captaincy after Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the ODI World Cup in India. His batting stats have suffered dramatically: only 190 runs in 10 Test innings with an average of 19, and an ODI average of 34. Although his T20I average is 38, his performance did not help Pakistan avoid an early exit from the T20 World Cup after losing to the USA.
During the Australian tour last year, Babar scored 126 runs at an average of 21. In the T20 World Cup, he scored 122 runs in four matches at an average of 40.66 but faced criticism for a low strike rate of 101.66.
In the ongoing series against Bangladesh, Babar has only scored 64 runs in four innings. He hopes to regain his form in the upcoming series against England.
Support from Jason Gillespie
Despite the criticism, Babar has received support from Jason Gillespie, Pakistan’s current Test head coach and former Australian fast bowler. Gillespie remains confident in Babar’s abilities and believes that he will soon start scoring big runs again.
