Bangladesh in Danger of ICC Penalty During India Test

Bangladesh started well in the first Test match against India in Chennai. However, by the end of the first day, they found themselves in a difficult situation.

Strong Start, Tough Finish

Bangladesh’s bowlers initially performed excellently, reducing India’s score to 34 for 3 and later to 144 for 6. But a brilliant partnership between Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja for the seventh wicket rescued India. By the end of the day, India had reached 339 for 6, with Ashwin unbeaten on 102 and Jadeja scoring 86 not out.

Possible ICC Penalty

Despite this, a bigger concern for Bangladesh is their slow over rate. They were 10 overs behind the target, even after getting a 30-minute extension. This could lead to a penalty from the International Cricket Council (ICC).

This is especially worrying as Bangladesh had already lost three World Test Championship (WTC) points and were fined 15% of their match fees last month for a similar issue. In that instance, they were three overs short in their Test against Pakistan.

Over Rate in the India Test

In their current match against India, Bangladesh bowled only 80 overs throughout the day—23 in the first session, 25 in the second, and 32 in the final session.

Cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle expressed his disappointment, stating on social media: “Bangladesh bowled less than 80 overs, even with an extra half hour. This is unacceptable.

ICC Rules on Penalties

According to Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, “A team will lose one World Test Championship point for each penalty over it incurs during the round stage.
