England has named Brendon McCullum as the new white-ball head coach for the men’s white-ball cricket team, with his tenure beginning in January 2025. He will take on this role just before the India tour and the ICC Champions Trophy.
McCullum, who has been the head coach of England’s Test team since 2022, is known for introducing an aggressive playing style in Test cricket. His contract has been extended until the end of 2027.
Until McCullum officially takes over in January, Marcus Trescothick will temporarily lead the men’s limited-overs team. His first task will be managing the upcoming series against Australia, followed by the Caribbean tour.

Addressing Scheduling Challenges
Rob Key, Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, acknowledged the difficulties caused by the overlapping formats in the past two years. However, he noted that these challenges will ease starting in January.
He said, “The timing of the new schedule will allow McCullum to focus on both roles effectively. We believe this new structure will help our players and coaching staff perform at their best.”
Key added, “We are very fortunate to have someone of Brendon’s caliber committed to English cricket.”
McCullum Excited for the New Role
Brendon McCullum expressed his enthusiasm for the new challenge. He explained that having a single coach across all formats is a sensible approach.
“I’ve really enjoyed working with the Test team, and now I’m excited to also lead the white-ball sides,” McCullum said in an ECB statement. “I’m ready for this new challenge and look forward to working closely with Jos Buttler and the team to build on the strong foundation we have. The idea of a unified coaching structure, especially with the schedule becoming more manageable next year, made perfect sense.”
