England’s white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, is still not fit to play. He won’t be in Lancashire’s T20 Blast quarter-final match against Sussex on September 4. Buttler, who last played in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final loss to India, has been struggling with a calf injury. This injury also kept him out of The Hundred for the Manchester Originals.
Lancashire head coach Dale Benkenstein informed BBC Radio that Buttler will miss the quarter-final.

Recovery and Future Plans
Benkenstein mentioned that Buttler’s injury has worsened, making it unlikely for him to participate in upcoming international matches. England will decide on his participation by September 8. If Buttler is unable to play, it might reduce his workload, especially since he is not expected to keep wickets against Australia. The T20I series between England and Australia starts on September 11.
Potential Leadership Changes
Currently, England does not have a designated vice-captain for white-ball formats. If Buttler remains sidelined, Sam Curran and Phil Salt are the top candidates to lead the team. Curran led the Punjab Kings during Shikhar Dhawan’s absence in the IPL 2024, while Salt captained the Manchester Originals during Buttler’s absence in The Hundred 2024.
