Mumbai Indians – 246/5
In the 2024 IPL season, Mumbai Indians almost pulled off an impossible chase. After Sunrisers Hyderabad posted the highest run chases in IPL history (277/3), thanks to half-centuries from Heinrich Klaasen, Abhishek Sharma, and Travis Head, Mumbai set out to chase this massive score. Though several Mumbai batters got good starts, only Tilak Varma (64) and Tim David (42* off 22 balls) were able to push towards the target. Mumbai ended at 246/5, achieving the highest second-innings total but falling 31 runs short.
In 2020, Rajasthan Royals achieved the highest run chases in IPL history. Kings XI Punjab had posted a massive 223/2, with Mayank Agarwal (106) and KL Rahul (69) leading the way. Rajasthan’s chase was led by Steven Smith’s quickfire 50 off 27 balls and Sanju Samson’s incredible 85 off 42 balls. However, it was Rahul Tewatia who stole the show, smashing seven sixes and scoring 43 in 31 balls, helping the Royals to win with just 3 balls to spare.
Rajasthan Royals – 223/5
In IPL 2010, Rajasthan Royals came close to another historic chase against Chennai Super Kings. Chennai set a huge target of 247/5, with Murali Vijay (127) and Albie Morkel (62) leading their innings. In reply, Naman Ojha’s 94 off 55 balls, along with support from Shane Watson (60) and Michael Lumb (37), took Rajasthan close, but they fell short at 223/5. Doug Bollinger’s tight bowling spell for Chennai played a crucial role in securing their win.
Mumbai Indians – 223/6
During the 2017 season, Mumbai Indians matched the previous record for the highest run chases in IPL, scoring 223/6 against Kings XI Punjab. Batting first, Punjab posted 230/3, thanks to Wriddhiman Saha’s unbeaten 93 off 55 balls. Despite Lendl Simmons’ 59 and Kieron Pollard’s 50* off 24 balls, Mumbai lost the match by 7 runs, falling short in the final overs.
In 2021, Mumbai Indians faced Chennai Super Kings in a nail-biting encounter. Chasing 219, Mumbai lost early wickets but Kieron Pollard’s incredible 87* off 34 balls secured a last-ball victory for his team. Pollard also bowled two tight overs, taking crucial wickets to limit Chennai to 218/4. His all-round performance was key in one of the highest run chases in IPL history.
