India won the T20 World Cup 2024 yesterday, marking their first ICC title in 11 years. Their last ICC trophy was the 2013 Champions Trophy, with the previous T20 World Cup victory in 2007.
In 2007, India, led by MS Dhoni, triumphed as underdogs in the inaugural T20I tournament. They defeated top teams like England, Australia, South Africa, and Pakistan to clinch the trophy.
After 17 years, India secured another T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s leadership on Saturday in Barbados. Both the 2007 and 2024 victories have notable similarities, with Rohit being the sole common member between the two squads.
1. A Delhi-based opener scores 70+ for India in final, team win by less than 10 runs
In the first T20 World Cup final against Pakistan, Gautam Gambhir scored the most runs for India, making 75 runs from 54 balls. His performance helped India reach a total of 157-5.
Similarly, in 2024, Virat Kohli from Delhi opened the batting and scored 76 runs from 59 balls for India. India won the 2007 T20 World Cup final by five runs and the 2024 final by seven runs.
Interestingly, the final ball in both matches was bowled by a right-arm pace bowling all-rounder. In 2007, it was Joginder Sharma, and in 2024, it was Hardik Pandya.
2. India’s group game against an associate nation was abandoned due to rain
In 2007, India were in Group D with Pakistan and Scotland. Their first match against Scotland was stopped because of rain. India later won against Pakistan in a bowl-out to enter the Super 8s.
In 2024, India were in Group A with Pakistan, Canada, USA, and Ireland. They won against Pakistan, USA, and Ireland, but their match with Canada was canceled due to rain.
3. A left-arm pacer with the surname ‘Singh’ was India’s top wicket-taker in both T20 World Cup triumphs
RP Singh, a left-handed fast bowler, took the most wickets for India in the first T20 World Cup, with 12 wickets in six games at an average of 12.66.
Seventeen years later, Arshdeep Singh, another left-handed fast bowler, became India’s top bowler in the T20 World Cup. He took 17 wickets in eight matches, averaging 12.64.
4. India benched a leg-spinner for the entire tournament
In 2007, Piyush Chawla was the only player in India’s T20 World Cup squad who didn’t play any matches but still lifted the trophy.
Likewise, in 2024, Yuzvendra Chahal sat on the bench throughout the T20 World Cup. He supported his teammates and later celebrated with the trophy in hand.
5. India benched a right-arm fast bowler who took one wicket in three matches
In 2007, India removed Ajit Agarkar from the team after he took only one wicket in three matches. After losing to New Zealand, Joginder Sharma replaced him.
Seventeen years later, Mohammed Siraj also took one wicket in three games during the group stage. When the tournament shifted to the West Indies for the Super 8s, India dropped Siraj to include Kuldeep Yadav, a left-arm wrist-spinner, in the team.
